Screen Machine: Room Status Display

Display Screen Machine room modes, music playback, and scene status on Quote/0, with updates triggered by changes or a configured interval.

Screen Machine manages room audiovisual systems and generative visuals. Its dot_service turns room modes, music playback, automation, and scene information into a Quote/0 dashboard, so you can check the current state without opening the control page.

Features

  • Room overview: Show the room mode, automation, microphone and AI states, and current music or scene information.
  • Quote/0 layout: Render a 296 × 152 black-and-white image and send it through the Dot Image API.
  • Change-based updates: Push settled changes to key states, with separate refresh periods for normal and live scenes.
  • Preview and manual push: Local endpoints provide image previews, service status, and manual publishing.
  • Refresh and sleep settings: Synchronize the device refresh interval through the Dot Settings API and optionally configure sleep hours.

Before you start

  • A deployed Screen Machine instance and the room, playback, and scene services you need
  • A Python environment and repository dependencies
  • A bound Quote/0, its device ID, and a Dot API key
  • A runtime environment that can reach Dot cloud services and the relevant data services

This is a room-status dashboard for self-hosted setups. Configure its data sources for your own devices and scenes.

Setup

  1. Deploy Screen Machine and the required companion services following the repository instructions. Confirm that room and playback information can be retrieved.
  2. Configure device-to-room mappings, refresh periods, and optional sleep hours in config/room/dot.json. Store the Dot API key in the api_key field of the local ~/.config/screen-machine/dot.json file. Do not commit it to the repository.
  3. Run python -m dot_service --port <PORT> from the repository root, replacing <PORT> with an available local port. Inspect the results through its status, image-preview, and manual-push endpoints. Refer to the current repository version for available options.

The Dot integration is in dot_service. The main README and room_service/README.md describe the overall deployment and room service.

Device settings

The service changes Quote/0 refresh intervals according to its configuration and may enable sleep hours. Review the configuration before connecting, including how it affects other content updates on the device.
